What if you made a self aware construct? Is it possible to just designate an awareness to an inanimate object? Would this construct have a will of its own and perhaps disobey termination commands? My personal theory is that ALL things have an awareness whether they appear to be aware or not. The thing with inanimate objects is that their awareness is derived from the system in which it exists or originates. A rock on a beach is aware because the entire earth is aware. This spawns a whole topic of consciousness, awareness and awareness origins. What do you think?

there's a discussion on self-aware constructs in the Ethics Discussion forum. It's in the Support section.

As far as the practicality of it, it is actually very difficult to program a consciousness. The "self-aware" aspect can be achieved by simply programming it to loop itself and feedback as long as it is alive, but it's really quite difficult to program "consciousness" and "awareness." That is, short of transferring or copying your own to it...
I know, unfortunately, a chap who did a lot of dabbling in the area. As far as I can tell, his success was limited to creating constructs which were intelligent and "aware," but only to the fulfillment of a given mission: that is, they would take creative and intelligent approaches to survive and work towards accomplishing whatever mission they were programmed for.
Whether he made any progress after these constructs I don't know. Personally, I should hope not, as it does call into question various ethical considerations, which can be discussed in Ethics.
