I would like to make myself a custom avatar, how would I go about getting that done?

Just come up with an uncopyrighted image that you like, that will reduce well, and e-mail it to wingedwolfpsion@gmail.com with the request. Limit 3.

You would have to have a working knowledge of a software such as Photoshop or GIMP. I know photoshop pretty well if you need help with it feel free to ask. Also if you'd like I could try making something for it with what you would have in mind.
